At first glance, I see a beautiful and natural looking facial expression and picture as a whole. Though I cannot shake the feeling that there is something conflicting in this picture. The right side of the head, as seen in the pic, which would be her left side, looks sad and empty indeed. The hair covering most of the face gives a feeling of withdrawal and adds to the overal emptiness of her glance. However, the left side of her face (which would be her right), I don't see the emptiness. Somehow, I can only see a smile, even though it isn't there. Maybe the girl was about to laugh when the picture was taken, maybe I'm flat out wrong, or maybe she shows a form of contentness with the state of emptiness she portrays, if that makes sense. Maybe it's because you can see her eyebrow there, or the light is very warm, or maybe her face is more open because there is no hair covering this half. There is a lot more to this image than I could see at first glance, but it only adds to the beauty.
If the sense of a smile was not the intention, I still wouldn't change it, since it gives the picture something extra. More of a story behind the emptiness. If it was done intentional, kudos. If I'm just seeing things, I hope to encourage others to see it too.
